This award was dedicated to the late Dato Dr Thirumal Manickam in recognition of his significant contributions to introducing the Ilizarov technique in Malaysia in the early 1990s. He first utilized this method at Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, Seremban, and later served as the Organising Chairperson for the 2nd ASAMI Malaysia-International Scientific Meeting in 2015. In 2016, he was elected as the second President of ASAMI Malaysia, representing Malaysian delegates at the ASAMI-ILLRS World International scientific meeting. As the former Head of Sub Speciality Advanced Musculoskeletal Trauma under the Ministry of Health, he integrated the Ilizarov technique into the core syllabus of this sub-speciality. Through his mentorship, he trained numerous orthopaedic surgeons who continue to carry on his legacy in limb reconstruction procedures using the Ilizarov technique.
Ultimately, the Dato’ Dr Thirumal Manickam Best Clinical Paper Award does more than recognize outstanding scientific contribution. It stands as a living tribute to a visionary pioneer whose dedication permanently elevated orthopaedic care in Malaysia. By honoring exceptional clinical research at this congress, the award preserves his profound impact on the medical community and ensures that his passion for innovation, education, and mentorship remains a guiding light. It serves to inspire current and future generations of orthopaedic surgeons to pursue the same high standards of clinical excellence, leadership, and unwavering commitment to patient care that defined Dato’ Dr Thirumal Manickam’s remarkable career and enduring legacy.
PROF SAW AIK BEST TRANSLATIONAL PAPER AWARD
The Prof Saw Aik Best Translational Paper Award recognises excellence in translational and non-clinical research submitted to the congress....
This award is named in honour of Professor Dr. Saw Aik, a foundational pioneer of modern limb reconstruction in Malaysia. In 1995, Prof. Saw Aik established Ilizarov surgery as a formal discipline at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). From simple bone loss, it was gradually used for fracture fixation, joint contracture, and deformity repair. Currently, it is being done for a variety of indications. He was a visionary educator outside of the operating room, starting the country's yearly basic and intermediate Ilizarov courses in 1998, and establishing critical fellowship training pathways to nurture the next generation of sub-specialists.
As a chief coordinator of the movement and a steadfast leader, Prof. Saw Aik shouldered the responsibility of representing Malaysia in international ASAMI meetings until 2010, laying the vital groundwork for the country's official entry into the global ASAMI body in 2013. He is currently actively involved in the development of ilizarov service in many lower and medium income countries especially in the ASEAN region. He is also the key player in the establishment of a body donation program for the purpose of surgical training and research called the Silent Mentor Program together with the Tzu Chi Foundation.
In the spirit of his dedication to evolving clinical practice through structured education and scientific advancement, this award celebrates visionary research that bridges science, innovation, technology, and future clinical application. Featuring finalists from around the world, it highlights groundbreaking work in biomechanics, biological sciences, medical innovation, and emerging orthopaedic technologies that may redefine future treatment possibilities.
